One more inspection tour down to the engine room to see if any water was reported rising in the bilges. It took all his willpower to keep from heading to the snug confines of his bunk and gratefully closing his eyes to the grim set of problems surrounding the ship. His eyes darted up and down the passageway, and he constantly dabbed a linen handkerchief at his small mouth. ![]() Gottschalk appeared unduly nervous to Church. He could not see any sign of trickling grit from the ship's motion. They groaned and creaked under the stress, but they seemed firm and secure. Then Church went below and checked two of the ore holds, probing his flashlight at the heavy shorings and stanchions installed to keep the manganese cargo from shifting. He turned without a word and left the wheelhouse.Ī sickening realization struck Church. The Crogan Castle, the ship that sent the distress signal, said her prow was stove in and her superstructure damaged. Then slowly his hands relaxed as he realized any further argument with Worley was a waste of breath. Drives my wife crazy.Ĭhurch hesitated, his fists clenched. I can never sleep more than a few hours at a stretch. I hope to spend the rest of my State Department service in Washington.Ī faint expression of relief passed over the consul general's face and he smiled.Might as well. No, I sent her on ahead to our home in Maryland. I don't want to see your face until we reach port. The steaming light, suspended between the two forward masts that formed a support for the skeletal grid connecting the coaling derricks, cast a weird glow that was reflected by the eerie radiance of the approaching swells. They made their way topside and walked along the runway leading from the aft deckhouses toward the forecastle, passing under the bridge superstructure awkwardly suspended on steel stiltlike stanchions. ![]() Fiberglass screen barely even slows down mice.If Church thought the request unusual, he said nothing, simply nodded and started off toward the forward part of the ship with the fat little consul general huffing in his wake. Fiberglass screen would be a value option, as it provides some protection, but I know insects can eventually get through it. Stainless screen costs more, but lasts forever (especially if you use 316 alloy). I don't like using aluminum screen because it's too prone to corroding away, and then you have no protection. This would work well, but the tricky part would be keeping the screen flat enough so that you didn't have "bubbles" where the screen was above the coating. You could try wrapping stainless screening tightly to your wall, then put the coating over the screen so that the screen gets encapsulated into the coating. The canned foam encapsulates the hardware cloth, and then the hardware cloth will stop mice from chewing through the foam. ![]() I often take some 1/2" mesh hardware cloth and put that in gaps before I fill the gap with canned foam. If you need bug PROOF, you could try a variation on my mouse proof barrier. coating" in the "slows them down" category, but I wouldn't think it would act as a true barrier. I've seen squirrels chew through the corrugated steel tape in armored fiber optic cables, but at least that armor slows them down. I have seen critters chew through fiberglass insect screen. There are actually some aquatic critters that can etch glass, but I'm not aware of any terrestrial critters that will. The only materials I've found are pretty much critter proof are metal, concrete, and glass. Mice are also pretty good at chewing through stuff. ![]() I've seen things chew through the "pest block" version of great stuff, that is specifically intended to block insects, for example. While I can't speak specifically to termites, I can tell you that insects are pretty good at chewing through just about anything.
